Collection: JAPANESE N64 GAMES
When the Nintendo 64 was released in Japan on June 23rd 1996 they had some big shoes to fill and a massive competitor in Sony's Playstation console which was released a year and a half prior. Nintendo took a big gamble at the time by using cartridges for games when most of the industry was already transitioning to disc based media. Cartridges were more expensive to make and took longer to make as well. This caused a lot of people in Japan at the time to think that Nintendo was behind the times.
With the Playstation already released there was a large fanbase built up around it and Nintendo had to compete and try and get some of those gamers to move over to their side. It wasn't easy, but Nintendo was ready with two very solid titles on launch with Super Mario 64 and Pilotwings 64. They also released Saikyo Habu Shogi, which is a Japanese chess game.Â
While not as popular as they had hoped the Nintendo 64 was still a success in Japan with over 5.5 million consoles sold and with a fun range of colours available a lot of people were drawn to the console. The games had no load time, which was a big negative on the Playstation console.
The love for the N64 worldwide is just as big as it was then. The nostalgia factor is huge with so many grade A titles available for the console.Â
